After an attempted break-in, through a basement fire exit door, to the front elevation, MDM were contacted to discuss the buildings security issues. MDM were recommended by QMJ’s neighbour, The Chambers, who had been supplied with CX3 Retractable Grilles after a burglary.

It was decided to quote for the replacement of the damaged fire exit door, a CX2 grille to the adjacent window and the replacement of the vulnerable timber entrance door to the rear of the property.

The client wanted to ensure that the two replacement doors were as secure as possible. It was therefore decided to install high and low level five lever deadlocks in addition to the central locks. The original fire exit was fitted with magnetic locks connected to the fire alarm system. The new door would be fitted with internal reinforcing plates so that the magnetic locks could be refitted by the alarm company.

The fire exit door did not require external access therefore it was quoted with no external furniture and a central sashlock with internal emergency escape facility. As the opening was a designated fire exit it was made clear that it would be the client’s responsibility to ensure that the deadlocks must be unlocked while the building is occupied.

The rear entrance is the final exit and therefore the additional locks were quoted with internal and external operation. As this door was to be opening outwards, for added security, the door would incorporate a Georgian wire vision panel.

Instructions were received to proceed on 25^th March for the earliest delivery. The installation team was on site on 26^th March to carry out the work.

After a few days the client contacted MDM with regard to the operation of the rear door. It was considered inconvenient that the five lever sashlock needed to be locked to keep the opening secure during the day. The door was therefore retro fitted with an internal surface mounted nightlatch with access by yale key for use during opening hours.

Months after completion of this contract the area experienced a spate of burglaries and therefore MDM replaced an existing non-insurance rated retractable grille to a ground floor rear window with a CX2 grille. At the same time three additional rear fire escape windows were fitted with CX2 grilles and the timber front door was fitted with high and low level internal five lever deadlocks to complete the security of the premises.
